Over fifty alumni and friends along with the undergraduate chapter gathered at the SigEp IL-Beta house during the Alumni Open House/Family Day on October 23, 2022. The day was spent catching up with old friends, meeting new brothers and seeing the chapter house and upcoming construction plans.
During the event the Bill Bach Scholarship was awarded to the four undergraduates who earned a 4.0 GPA during the Spring 2022 semester. Bill Bach himself was in attendance to hand them the scholarship!
Congratulations to brothers Derek Rhea, Alex Guban, Alejandro Torres, and Ammar Waheed.
The highlight of the event was when long time volunteers Bill Lowden and Cam Burke, on behalf of the Alumni Board and undergraduate chapter, surprised brother Phil Vittore and awarded him a chapter lifetime achievement award for his 60 years of service to our Illinois Beta SigEp Chapter. In addition to the award and a few gifts, it was also announced that the Outstanding Brother Award will be renamed to be the Phillip J Vittore Brother of the Year Award. This award will be given to undergraduates who not only embody the cardinal principals of Virtue, Diligence, and Brotherly Love but also go the extra mile as a brother in Sigma Phi Epsilon.
“My reward is not this plaque but it is the new chapter” said Phil, “I see all the faces that came through during the 60 years I’ve been here and if we’re properly blessed we will have the same number come through to enjoy what a fraternity is and what it can do for you, because it is the brotherhood that is meaningful in the long run.”
Phil was an instrumental part in moving the chapter from Brown Hall into our current house at 3341 S Wabash back in the 60s and played a major role with the litigation process that made it a possibility for our chapter to come back to IIT. Illinois Beta has gone through a lot of growth since re-chartering efforts started back in 2018. The chapter has re-chartered in 2020 during the pandemic, has become a SigEp Learning Community (the only SLC in Illinois), earned multiple national awards, and has grown the chapter to 19 members. Just like Phil we are all looking forward to seeing the meaningful brotherhood we build over the next 60+ years.
